Workshop on Femininity in Art

July 30 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Join Katrina-Eve Manica and Aurèlia Puigdomènech in this workshop to explore how contemporary artists play with femininity and challenge society’s understanding of gender.

How does femininity shape art? How do artists convey femininity? Join us in this workshop to explore how contemporary artists play with femininity and challenge society’s understanding of gender.

Through the work of American writer and performance artist Alok Vaid-Menon, we explore how we understand femininity and what happens when that idea is challenged.

Looking into the media coverage of the US female football team, we consider how their images negotiate femininity. What reactions occur when the image of women does not conform to the ‘femininity’ that society demands of them?

Katrina-Eve Manica is a PhD student at the Department of History of Art, University of York. Her research is titled: Aestheticism of Empire: longing for beauty.

Aurèlia Puigdomènech is a PhD student at the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of York. Her research looks into meanings of femininity in contemporary secular images of the Virgin Mary.
