Find the fascinating stories in your family history and let them inspire you to write your own fiction, memoir or poetry. Tutors: Janet Dean and Laura Yeoman.
A half-day workshop for people interested in using their family history as a source for creative and life writing. York Explore Archivist Laura Yeoman will provide an introduction to the archives and online family history resources, and Janet Dean will use examples from published work and writing exercises to get you started on unlocking your fascinating family stories. Suitable for people new to family history research and those with more experience, and open to anybody with an interest in writing creatively from factual sources.
Janet Dean is a writer based in York. Her poetry has appeared in the Northern Poetry Library’s Poem of the North, in The York Literary Review and in Strix, as well as anthologies published by Valley Press, Paper Swans Press and Templar. Her short fiction has recently been published by Comma Press and she has been a finalist in Script Factor 2018. In March 2019 as Janet Dean Knight her historical novel The Peacemaker, a story of buried family secrets, was published by Top Hat Books. Janet has an MA in Creative Writing from York St John University and with Clara Challoner Walker she runs Awakening The Writer Within retreats and workshops in France and Yorkshire.
