Coffeehouse: The World at his feet – Travelling with Charles Dickens

York Explore
17th May 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm £3

Coffeehouse: Debate, Discussion, Controversy, Coffee

Charles Dickens was a prolific writer and travelled widely in his life – both in the UK and to Europe and America. His novels frequently include travel – both as a promise and a threat – for various characters. Several novels are also set in or include characters from well beyond the UK.

While literature has a long history with travel, the 19th-century also witnessed more widely accessible forms of actual travel for an increasing number of people. The railway opened the UK to tourism, while literature continued to titillate readers with both national and international locations. Thomas Cook, a Derbyshire businessman, established his travel agency in London in 1872.

Join Dr Kaley Kramer of York St John University to talk about Dickens’s world and the 19th century traveller.
