Art + Activism [an exhibition] from the Centre for Applied Human Rights
20th January 2018
An event every day that begins at 12:00 am, repeating until 12th February 2018
Art and Activism is a multi media exhibition of the work and words of human rights activists and artists from around the world, at York Explore, the King’s Manor and Pica Studios. It showcases for the first time a collection of work by international artists inspired by the Centre for Applied Human Rights, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
Many of us are content to exist in the world as it is, but some people are inspired to change it or urgently need to. How does it actually feel to navigate the risks of fighting for justice, equality and liberty in today’s world? And how can we imagine new ways of doing this?
Human rights defenders from some of the world’s most repressive regimes seek sanctuary at the University of York in a unique protective fellowship scheme which offers a place to rest and reflect in safe surroundings. As part of the Art and Activism exhibition York Explore hosts a collection of photographic portraits of some of the political risk takers, rebels and idealists who have been part of the centre over the past ten years.
