The Big City Read programme for 2018 is revealed!
Brochure and event booking from 1 August
Free books and events from 20 September to 16 November
Explore York is thrilled to be launching its Big City Read 2018 on Wednesday 1 August when the brochure will be available in our libraries and online and booking will open.
Our Big City Read book for 2018 is Matt Haig’s The Radleys. Matt is riding the crest of a wave at the minute as his latest book Notes on a Nervous Planet went straight into the Sunday Times bestseller list at number one at the beginning of July. Matt will be appearing in York twice to help us to both launch and celebrate the end of the Big City Read. You can find details of these events and many more in our brochure. Do download a copy Big City Read Brochure 2018 or pick one up from your local library.
York’s Ultra Fibre Optic (UFO) from TalkTalk, who are rolling out ultra-fast full fibre broadband to 55,000 homes and businesses across York over the next two years, have generously sponsored our brochure. Helen Fletcher, Marketing Manager from York’s UFO said: “This is a fantastic community initiative and we are thrilled to be able to help publicise it. We hope it encourages everyone to read more whether to learn or for pleasure, reading is so powerful!”
The Big City Read is about sharing the joy of reading and we will be giving away 5,000 free copies of The Radleys in York libraries and at special pop-up events from 21 September, see the At a Glance section of our programme for dates and venues.
Matt said “As a great believer in the personal, social and therapeutic power of reading it is an absolute honour to be part of this year’s York Big City Read. It’s a great scheme which places books where they need to be, in the heart of the community. “
In addition to author events, reading groups, films, talks and workshops we are delighted to be offering a new strand to the Big City Read this year. We have been awarded funding from Arts Council England to commission a short play, Surprise Ending, which has been written for us by Bridget Foreman and will be performed by Riding Lights Theatre Company in all of our libraries.
